Plastic Surgery Patients US Magazine
Plastic-surgery obsessed Americans will soon be able to read a glossy magazine devoted almost entirely to the subject.
Skin Deep magazine says its mission is to educate readers about the “fascinating, everchanging world of cosmetic plastic surgery, skin care, anti-ageing and health and medicine”.
Articles in the first edition, set to hit newsstands later this month, include Lip Obsession, Mommy Makeovers and What Men Really Think About Breast Implants.
Editor-in-chief Dr Jeannette Martello, a practising plastic surgeon, said she believed the magazine had a valid purpose.
“I think society does, in a sense, discriminate,” she told the New York Post.
“For sure against the obese, but even just against those that aren’t seen as attractive.”
With procedures like “lunchtime lipo” and reality TV shows like Extreme Makeover and The Swan increasingly popular in the US, paying to cover up the effects of ageing or just improve on what people already have is becoming more and more acceptable.
Ms Martello said the magazine’s main aim was not to convert people to cosmetic surgery but to convey the gravity of undertaking such procedures in the face of developments.
“A lot of people are being maimed, scarred and even killed because they’re not getting the proper information,” she said.
“They think it’s as easy as getting their hair or nails done.
“We tell people what the complications are.”
These could range from nerve damage or skin loss to “belly-button death” – a complication of having a tummy tuck.
