Plastic Surgery "Tianshi Ai Meili" Beauty Show

SHANGHAI, China (AP) - Citing high ratings, a Chinese broadcaster said Monday it will produce a second season of a controversial program that shows women having plastic surgery and competing in a beauty contest.

The first season of "Tianshi Ai Meili" concluded on Friday with 22-year-old Yao Xiting beating her 13 rivals, all of whom had been picked for surgical makeovers from among hundreds of applicants.

Audience numbers have been "extremely good," and the show would definitely be back for another season, producers at Hunan Television said in a news release.

A woman staff member at the programming center at ETV, the Hunan TV group channel that broadcast the first season, said final details for the next season were still being worked out. She declined to provide details or her name.

Along with pulling in viewers, the show, whose name roughly translates as "Angels Love Beauty," has drawn criticism for appearing to promote plastic surgery as a surefire route to success and happiness. Sometimes gory images of the women undergoing surgery also drew complaints.
