Fencer Gets Spiked for Cosmetic Surgery

A female foil fencer might be stripped of her national team status after getting plastic surgery without the permission of coaching staff.

The Korean Fencing Federation (KFF) said that it is currently in the process of determining disciplinary measures for Nam Hyun-hee, 25, with the final decision to be made at a committee meeting.

While staying at Nam, Taenung Training Center, a national sports team members’ village, Nam had eyelid surgery on Dec. 16, 2005 with the permission of her coaching staff since she had been suffering from a common condition in which the eyelashes get in the way of the eyelid.

``I just can’t understand why the KFF is so hard on Nam and making it such a big issue,’’ the coach said. ``She was at Taenung, but the case didn’t do much harm to her competence since she was resting prior to the Seoul Grand Prix tournament in February, and was not in an intense training program.

``It is true she had a facelift but it was not an extensive operation like grinding the bones or reworking the whole face. She told me the surgeon encouraged her to agree to the additional surgery,” he added.
