Changing Face Of Cosmetic Surgery

"It is better to look good than to feel good."

This line was made famous in the 1980s by Billy Crystal's "Fernando" character on Saturday Night Live, but few would have imagined that it was more than a catchphrase.

It was an indication of a cultural phenomenon that, 20 years later, is set to explode.

Cosmetic surgery is everywhere: on TV, in the office, all around campus. The pressure to look good (and look young) has never been greater. Prices have gone down, and the stigma associated with plastic (note the negative connotation of the word "plastic") surgery is dwindling.

According to HealthDay News, men are the newest arrivals to the party, with a 16 percent increase in cosmetic surgery procedures performed in 2000 - 1.2 million performed last year.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, (ASAPS), the Top Five male cosmetic surgeries in 2004 were:
1. Nose reshaping
2. Hair transplantation
3. Eyelid surgery
4. Liposuction
5. Breast reduction

And the ASAPS indicates that the Top Five Female cosmetic surgeries of 2004 were:
1. Nose reshaping
2. Eyelid surgery
3. Liposuction
4. Breast augmentation
5. Facelifts

Minimally invasive procedures like Botox injections, chemical peels, collagen injections and microdermabrasion, were also quite popular for both men and women.
