Irish Cosmetic Surgery Increase

A clinic in Dublin offering cosmetic surgery has seen its patient numbers jump by 200% in the last year.

According to the Harley Medical Group, it has had to extend its opening hours to accommodate the rising demand for both surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures.

These include laser hair removal, liposuction and breast augmentation.

"People are becoming more open minded about cosmetic surgery. It's now attainable to everyone and is no longer the preserve of the rich and famous", said Ed Toland, general manager of the group.

Does anyone else find this rather depressing - the idea of growing old gracefully seems to be dead and buried...

fifi:
Theres more to cosmetic surgery than meets the eye. After losing 8 stone in weight I am now left with a lot of loose skin in my stomach region. I would go under the knife in the morning if I had the money. Why shouldnt we try to look the very best we can be?

Mikey:
Anon: Cosmetic surgery is not all about hiding the effects of ageing. What about a woman that wants a tummy tuck after pregnancy or having a breast rebuilt after a mastectomy?

Anonymous:
Mikey, women have needed their breasts rebuilt after a mastectomy for years now - do you really think that is the reason for this increase in demand? I don't disagree with cosmetic surgery completely. It is medically required in some situations and in others, like Fifi mentioned, there is an extremely good reason. I just think it's sad that things like wrinkes are now seen as the enemy, something that must be got rid of at all costs.

Mikey:
Anon: Part of the reason for the increase in cosmetic surgery is that it is socially more acceptable now than in the past. Another factor is that Irish people now have more disposable income than in the past. I am not bothered about wrinkles and would never consider surgery to remove them but if my wrinkles did upset me and I could have them removed then why not? Anything to make us feel better about ourselves.
